A Neural Love Code: The body's need to engage and bond
with Dr. Stephen Porges and Dr. Sue Carter (Moderator Dr. Sonia Gomes)

16.40-18.30

The Love Code provides a metaphor to explore the neural mechanisms underlying how and why we attach, bond, fall in love and seek out safe and trusted others in an all too often unsafe world.  In this workshop Drs Carter and Porges will explore the body's need for intimate engagement and social bonding from an adaptive perspective. Through a probing, and at times personal, interview they will discuss how specific features in our social environment trigger neurophysiological systems that enable us either to be fearful and disengage or to feel safe and enter enduring intimate relations.

Presentation Topics:

  • The impact of Polyvagal Theory on attachment and bonding

  • The effect of social environment on neural and physiological systems

  • The biological and neurophysiological foundations of attachment and the search for love

  • The effect of forming safe and long-lasting intimate relationships on emotional and physical health
